Manchester United Twitter account mocked after bold tweet after 5-1 opening day victory over Leeds resurfaces... with Red Devils now 22 POINTS behind arch rivals Manchester City

Manchester United's bold prediction at the start of the season has come back to haunt them after the Red Devils fell further away from qualifying for the Champions League on Monday night.

A stunning late strike from Portuguese veteran Joao Moutinho handed Wolves their first away victory against United in 42 years as Bruno Lage's side outclassed the Red Devils.

United's defeat leaves them in seventh position, four points adrift of fourth-placed Arsenal and a mammoth 22 points behind runaway league leaders Manchester City, painting a stark reminder of the sizeable task at hand for Ralf Rangnick.

And a brash tweet posted by United following their opening day 5-1 win over Leeds has resurfaced, causing rival fans to mock the Red Devils.

Alongside a screenshot of the table, with United top, the club posted: 'Don't say it, don't say it, don't say it, don't sa-', hinting that the Red Devils were on for a title charge under former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian was sacked in November and United are some distance from challenging for the league title, despite the best efforts of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The tweet has garnered attention from City fans, who have taken the opportunity to mock their over-enthusiastic rivals after their torrid performance against Lage's visitors.

'It's the same every season,' one fan said. 'They'll make 4 amazing on paper signings in the summer beat Everton 4-0 at home on opening day get carried away and then be 7th at Christmas'.

Another fan posted a picture of club legend Sergio Aguero smirking with the caption: 'They're 7th now?'

One supporter account simply responded: 'Really shouldn't have said it'.
