Bayern supporters aren't forgetting their UEFA fan ban in a hurry, Mikel Arteta's pre-match mind games continue - and Takehiro Tomiyasu's performance offers Arsenal a silver lining

Arsenal's Champions League dream came grinding to a disappointing halt on Wednesday night as Joshua Kimmich's header handed Bayern Munich a 3-2 win on aggregate in the quarter-finals.

Mikel Arteta's side struggled to create any clear cut chance at the Allianz Arena, with Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz unable to replicate the stellar form they've shown in front of goal this campaign.

Mail Sport's ISAAN KHAN takes note of the things you might have missed during the Champions League tie.

Gunners legends in the house

Arsenal royalty descended on the Allianz Arena, ex-centre back David O’Leary and goalkeeper Jens Lehmann in attendance.

Both have won trophies with the north London club, O’Leary clinching the league title twice in his 18-year career with the Gunners, while Lehmann, of course, was part of the 2004 Invincibles side.

Though, interestingly, owners Stan and Josh Kroenke were present, too. The pair will have felt how special a night like this is after a 14-year absence from the Champions League quarter-finals.

More Arteta mind games

Mikel Arteta’s European mind games continued. Usually, the player a club presents to the media at the press conference the day prior to a Champions League game will play.

Otherwise, the interview is, in many ways, redundant. Prior to the first leg, Arsenal put up Gabriel Jesus. He came on in the 67th minute.

Ahead of the second leg, Leandro Trossard was shown to the press on Tuesday. He, too, did not end up starting. A shrewd, obstructive move.

No more rainy Tuesdays in Stoke...

Five years ago, Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting came on for Stoke in the 72nd minute against Everton in the Premier League.

He scored but then was substituted back off the pitch seven minutes later due to a groin strain.

The forward has gone from sitting on the Stoke bench to a Champions League quarter-final with Bayern Munich. The stuff of dream.

Tomiyasu risk pays off

Takehiro Tomiyasu made a first start since December 2 — that was over 120 days ago. It made the choice laced with risk, owing to a lack of game time.

But after the recent matches, the left-back position was clearly an area which needed to be addressed carefully. Jakub Kiwior was run ragged by Leroy Sane in the first leg, and Oleksandr Zinchenko received criticism after an error in the 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

You could see why Tomiyasu was turned to.

From banned to banners...

The Bayern fans clearly won’t forget their recent fan ban anytime soon.

UEFA had barred all supporters of the German club from attending the first leg at the Emirates last week after fireworks were thrown onto the pitch during away games at Copenhagen and Lazio in the competition this season.

As result, in the 14th minute of this second leg, the Bayern faithful unfurled a banner reading: ‘We don’t like you either, exclude UEFA! Get out of our stadium!’

And then later in the first half, a separate protest read: ‘70 Euros up to 150 Euros for a seat. Any difference to Arsenal who milk their fans like cows?’

No love lost.

Arteta's Allianz journey

The previous time Arsenal beat Bayern at this stadium, on March 13, 2013, Arteta was the Gunners captain.

So he had previous experience of coming up trumps here. Yet, the rocking atmosphere created at the Allianz Arena is hard to replicate elsewhere.
