Barcelona 'want Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta' as new Catalans boss Xavi is 'unimpressed with Sergino Dest and Sergi Roberto' as Blues skipper enters final seven months of contract

  • Cesar Azpilicueta has emerged as a target for Barcelona, according to reports
  • The Spanish defender's Chelsea contract runs out at the end of the season
  • Azpilicueta is wanted by Xavi who is reportedly not keen on two right-backs
  • Spaniard Xavi is said to be unimpressed with Sergino Dest and Sergi Roberto

Barcelona want to sign Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta on a free transfer as new Catalans boss Xavi is unimpressed with right-back options Sergino Dest and Sergi Roberto, say reports.

The Blues skipper has now entered the last seven months of his contract at Stamford Bridge and can start negotiating a pre-contract agreement for a free transfer in just a matter of weeks.

Meanwhile, Xavi is starting to make his judgement on Barcelona's under-performing players after taking the Camp Nou role last month.

And according to Marca, Azpilicueta has been identified as a Barcelona target as Xavi wants a new right-back to start ahead of Dest and Roberto, who have played just four minutes between them since the Spaniard took over as boss.

Both players have struggled with injuries, with Roberto now facing four months on the treatment table after Barcelona announced the defender will need surgery on a thigh problem.

The Catalans also resigned 39-year-old veteran Dani Alves but he is not expected to be a long-term option.

American international Dest, meanwhile, had a back problem for Xavi's first two matches in charge and played the final few minutes of the club's Champions League draw with Benfica under Xavi.

Oscar Mingueza and Eric Garcia have been used as starting right-backs so far under Xavi, who has also deployed a back three at times involving Ronald Araujo.

Apzilicueta - who played international football with Xaxi for Spain, would represent a signing who could play at right-back, right centre-back and right wing-back, as the Barcelona boss plots his first transfer moves at the Camp Nou.

The Chelsea defender, 32, revealed earlier this season that he has no concerns over his contract in west London running down.

The Spaniard has played 14 times for the Blues this season to take his overall Chelsea appearance tally to 443 - but the emergence of youngsters Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah in recent years has limited his options at Stamford Bridge.

'I don't have any concerns,' Azpilicueta said in January when asked about his contract situation. 'I feel fully trusted by the club since I arrived.

'At the moment it is true that my contract ends in June but I just focus on what's next, to train and play the best I can.

'Everything will take care of itself, I don't need to say anything more. I have to keep doing what I am doing and it will come by itself.

'Of course, I love to be here, I feel loved since I arrived and my aim is to be here for as long as I can be.'
