After acquiring the services of Ferran Torres, Barcelona are now looking to move for a striker, with Alvaro Morata their primary target and Edinson Cavani representing their backup option.
Despite Cavani being keen to join the Blaugrana, Manchester United are not willing to part ways with the Uruguay international, who is part of Ralf Rangnick's plans for the remainder of the season.
In fact, after recovering from an injury, Cavani returned to action with an equaliser off the bench away at Newcastle and played the full 90 minutes in the following games with Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
"We've had quite a few conversations in the last couple of weeks, he's probably the player I have spoken to most," said Rangnick.
"I told him from the very first day he's a highly important player, probably the only one that can play as a striker back to goal and, as I have said before, his professionalism and work ethic is amazing.
"I told him that I desperately want him to stay until the end of the season and he knows how highly I rate and respect him.
"He knows I definitely would not let him go. For me, he is a highly important player for the rest of the season in a squad still playing in three competitions - we definitely need him and it is clear he has to stay."
Meanwhile, Barcelona are working on a potential Morata deal, but to sign the current Juventus forward they first need to offload certain players and make space in their salary cap.
With the futures of Philippe Coutinho, Samuel Umtiti and Yusuf Demir up in the air, Barcelona want to reach a loan deal for Morata with Atletico Madrid. For the Spain international to depart the Old Lady, however, the Serie A side need to find a replacement in January.
