Barcelona will not win any titles this season after Real Madrid won the LaLiga Santander title last Saturday but now they have to finish as high as possible in the table to secure some much needed finances.
Prestige is a part of it, but the money involved in qualifying for the next edition of the Champions League and playing in the Supercopa de Espana is more important given their delicate financial situation.
There is at least 50 million euros at stake in their next matches from revenue from the two competitions.
The first objective is to qualify for the Champions League. To compete in Europe's top competition next year, the club must be among the first four teams in the league to qualify.
And that means an amount of 42 million euros, which is the approximate money earned by a team that gets into the quarter-finals, a round that the club expects to reach.
The next objective would be to enter the Supercopa de Espana. To do so, they would have to finish second in the table.
Although they currently occupy this position, the competition for runners up is stronger with Sevilla and Atletico Madrid closing in. Playing in this tournament, as well as having the option of winning one more title next season, means an income of eight million euros, as was made clear in the audio tapes leaded between Luis Rubiales and Gerard Pique.
