Barcelona's looming problem this summer

The Real Mallorca game left two pieces of good news for Barcelona - the return of Ansu Fati and a good game, including a goal, from Memphis Depay.

Ansu and Memphis are more pieces at Xavi Hernandez's disposal to form an attacking trident that has become the area where there is most competition in the Barcelona squad.

In recent days, Xavi has been keen to stress that Barcelona must be doubled up in all positions, but in this case the depth of the squad is out of his hands.

Regardless of the onslaught of future signings, including Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona currently have eight attacking players in their ranks for three positions. And few of them have guaranteed continuity.

To these eight names must be added three more: Philippe Coutinho, Francisco Trincao and Antoine Griezmann. All of them will have to return to Barcelona to discuss their futures, making even more candidates for an area of the pitch where Mateu Alemany will have extra work to do next summer.

Luuk de Jong

The Dutch striker seems to be the easiest case to solve. At the end of the season his loan spell comes to an end and he will have to return to Sevilla.

Barcelona have an option to buy De Jong and are satisfied with his performances, but financial constraints make it difficult to think that the Dutchman is a real option for the Catalans' current forward line.

Adama Traore

One of the big unknowns for next year. His arrival brought an initial spark in his first few games, but as the matches went by he has been losing importance and is now a peripheral figure.

Adama has been a reserve in the last nine games, where he has only accumulated 63 minutes. At the end of the season Barcelona do not seem willing to pay the necessary amount to keep him, and a swap with Trincao is unlikely.

Memphis

Another of the big debates ahead of the summer market. The 28-year-old's contract expires in 2023 and he will have clubs interested in him this summer. These are two factors that could see Memphis head towards the exit door.

However, the difficulty to sign a striker who can match his numbers makes the option of keeping him an attractive one. With Memphis' goal against Mallorca he is once again the top scorer of the season with 12 goals.

Ousmane Dembele

The soap opera of the whole season and probably of the summer. Dembele's camp and Barcelona have come closer in negotiations in the last few days, but there is still a long way to go for the Frenchman to stay at the club next season.

There is willingness and his current performances tempt the club to make a small economic effort for it, but it may not be enough.

Ansu Fati

He is the franchise player of the new Barcelona. Everyone expects him to leave his injuries behind to be the cornerstone of the new project.

Along with Ronald Araujo, Pedri, Gavi and Ferran Torres, Ansu should form the backbone of the new Barcelona. His renewal has been one of the Azulgrana's great recent achievements.

Ferran Torres

Along with Ansu Fati, he is the player who has no doubts about his future at Barcelona. For Xavi, Ferran is a key player at the club and his 55 million euro transfer fee proves it.

One of the fixed players for the Catalan coach since his arrival, his six goals in 19 games and his versatility and youth are sufficient arguments for him to become a decisive player in the Xavi era.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The Gabonese striker has been one of those signings with an immediate impact. Although he has lost some punch in recent weeks, the numbers do not deceive: 11 goals in 19 games between LaLiga Santander and the Europa League are convincing figures to believe that he will be useful for Barcelona next season.

It is worth remembering that Aubameyang signed a deal until 2025, although there is the possibility of an agreed exit in 2023.

Martin Braithwaite

This could be one of the problems that the club's management will have to deal with next summer. Braithwaite has a contract until June 2024 and does not seem to be very keen on a change of scenery, but he does not fit in Xavi's plans.

Since the Dane's return from injury, Xavi has only used him for 10 minutes in 13 league games. The coach's message is clear in this case.
