There was a lot unhappiness among Barcelona’s board when Ronald Koeman chose to go 3-5-2 against Benfica. The team had played well against Levante and it seemed they would continue on that line.
However SPORT revealed on Wednesday afternoon that the coach was turning back to the three centre-back set up. The reality is the surprise that caused was not just external but also internal, among the players.
Koeman had not decided to change formation until hours before the game, something that Gerard Romero previously reported.
That means on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday they did not work with three at the back. Some players didn’t know they were playing or not playing until late on Wednesday.
The staff believe the team is prepared to play in either formation and don’t need anything special to switch. The players know what each system requires.
