Atletico Madrid take on Barcelona in LaLiga Santander this Saturday night in what is a huge fixture for both teams and, particularly, for Antoine Griezmann. The Frenchman made a shock deadline day move back to Atleti, but he is still technically a Barcelona player as he has joined Los Colchoneros on an initial loan deal, with an option to buy.
So, with Griezmann on loan from Barcelona, there was the possibility for the Catalan club to insert what is known in Spain as a 'clausula del miedo', or 'a fear clause' in English. This is where a club loaning out a player can insert a clause to request extra financial compensation if that player features against their parent club.
The practice is prohibited in FIFA and UEFA competition, but it was very common in Spain a few years ago. It is much less frequently used nowadays, even if it is still allowed.
Even in the heyday of the 'fear clause', Barcelona were one of the clubs who didn't use it as often as some of the other bigger teams and that remains the case. As such, Griezmann will be able to play against Barcelona this Saturday evening.
Yet... Griezmann might not start against Barcelona anyway
Even though Diego Simeone will be allowed to field Griezmann against the Blaugrana, it is expected that he'll opt for a starting front two of Joao Felix and Luis Suarez.
The Frenchman should start on the bench and could then come on later in the game to try to make an impact as a substitute.
