RB Leipzig swept Stuttgart aside in a blistering 4-0 triumph in the Bundesliga on Friday night, but the night belonged to one man: Dominik Szoboszlai.
The 20-year-old stole the show on his full Leipzig debut, as he lashed home a venomous strike from the edge of the box in the 38th minute before finding the net with a long-range free kick shortly after half time.
Szoboszlai's night was made even sweeter by the fact that it marked his full comeback after almost a year of persistent injury problems.
The attacking midfielder arrived at Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg in December 2020, having been elected as the best player in the Austrian Bundesliga for the 2019/20 season and carrying the reputation as one of the most exciting young players in world football.
Problems with a groin injury
However, the groin injury Szoboszlai suffered shortly after his arrival continued to plague him throughout the rest of the season, as he did not make a single appearance for his new employers in the second half of the campaign.
He was tipped to make an enormous impression at Euro 2020, with the hopes of Hungary resting largely on the wonderkid to help them get out of a group consisting of France, Germany and Portugal.
Yet, Szoboszlai's disappointing season continued as he was ruled out of the tournament after failing to overcome his groin troubles.
He looked to have turned a corner at the start of the 2021/22 season, making his Leipzig debut as a second-half substitute in the DFB-Pokal tie against SV Sandhausen on August 7, before scoring less than five minutes later.
That performance was followed up by Szoboszlai's dazzling display on Friday evening, as he now looks to kick on and begin to fulfil his enormous potential.
