Chelsea have all but guaranteed their passage to the last 16 of the Champions League after doing just enough to take three points off Malmo.
Without ever really excelling, Chelsea were on top throughout and put pressure on the Malmo goal from early on, with Spanish wing back Marcos Alonso looking lively high up the pitch.
The Swedish side put up a determined resistance, willed on by a passionate home crowd. They were breached just once but once was enough, as a solitary goal gave the spoils to Chelsea.
In the 56th minute, Kai Havertz, who started the game as a false No.9, combined well with Callum Hudson-Odoi on the right and the latter sent over an inviting low cross which Hakim Ziyech had only to tap in.
The Blues had chances to further their lead but Malmo held firm, although at the other end they failed to register a shot on target themselves.
The win for Chelsea means that they took advantage of the early kick-off to put pressure on Juventus, drawing, if only temporarily, level on points with the Vecchia Signora, while also putting some distance between themselves and Zenit.
