First half goals from Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane earned Liverpool a 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, with the Colchoneros going down to 10 men in the 36th minute as Felipe was shown a straight red card.
Atleti were already two goals down by then, as Liverpool started better and went ahead in the 13th minute when Diogo Jota headed in a bouncing cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold, before Sadio Mane started and finished a blistering move in the 21st minute.
It was a foul on Mane that saw Felipe dismissed 10 minutes before the break, with the centre-back shocked that it wasn't just a yellow for the foul on the Senegalese forward.
With a man advantage, Liverpool were in complete control to finish the first half and start the second, with Jota thinking he'd scored another just after the break only for VAR to intervene and show that he'd been marginally offside.
An offside was also called to rule out a Luis Suarez goal against his former club. That was in the 57th minute and it would have been an interesting contest had that one stood.
In the end, Liverpool were able to take their foot off the gas somewhat, while Atletico fought to protect the goal difference that could now prove crucial in this group.
Amarilla en Anfield... 🤨— Antoine Griezmann (@AntoGriezmann) November 3, 2021
Jota could have been sent off in the final 10 minutes for a challenge that was very similar to the one that got Antoine Griezmann sent off in the first game, but Liverpool finished two 11 men, two goals and three points that guarantee they'll top this group.
