After a whirlwind evening at the Signal Iduna Park, Borussia Dortmund booked themselves into the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in a decade.

The German trailed 2-1 heading into the tie but quickly flipped the game on it's head after first-half strikes from Julian Brandt and Ian Maatsen.

Following a triple substitution by Diego Simeone at the interval, Atletico hit back with Angel Correa and a Mats Hummels own-goal to shock the home crowd.

However, it didn't take long for the hosts to strike back in quick succession with Niclas Fullkrug and Marcel Sabitzer to wrap up the historic victory.

Here, Mail Sport's James Cohen provides player ratings for both sides.

Borussia Dortmund (4-2-3-1)

Gregor Kobel - 6

Was rarely tested in the first-half and unlucky to be beaten by a fluke own-goal. Little that he could do for the second.

Ian Maatsen - 8

An impressive display from the Chelsea loanee. He was lively in the first-half and produced a sensational strike to give them the lead in the tie. Faded after the break.

Nico Schlotterbeck - 7

An assured performance from the German international. Was confident on the ball and made sure that Alvaro Morata had a frustrating evening at the Signal Iduna

Mats Hummels - 6.5

The veteran defender rarely put a foot wrong but when he did, it proved costly. He could only watch on as his attempt of a clearance bounced into his own net in the second-half.

Julian Ryerson - 6

A solid defensive display from the full-back, who offered Atletico little down the right-hand side.

Emre Can - 6

The former Liverpool was a composed figure in the middle of the park for Edin Terzic's side and managed the game well after Dortmund took the lead.

Marcel Sabitzer - 8

A brilliant performance from Austrian international. After picking up two assists, he produced a world-class strike to give the hosts the lead in the tie.

Karim Adeyemi - 5.5

Looked lively in the Dortmund front-line but struggled to produce a final ball before getting substituted in the second-half.

Julian Brandt - 8.5

Was the heartbeat of Dortmund's attack at Signal Iduna Park. His well-taken strike kick-started the chaos and, from there, all good things came through the German.

Jadon Sancho - 7.5

Another step in the right direction for the Manchester United loanee. Provided a lot of energy and looked particularly dangerous in the first-half.

Niclas Fullkrug - 7

Was quiet throughout most of the match but popped up with a sensational header to pull Dortmund back into the tie.

Atletico Madrid (5-3-2)

Jan Oblak - 5

A rare underwhelming performance from the Atletico veteran. Could have done better for two of Dortmund's goals on the night.

Cesasr Azpilicueta - 5

The former Chelsea captain produced a sensational block to keep the score levels early on but, ultimately, struggled to deal with Dortmund's blistering attack.

Mario Hermoso - 6

It was his header that deflected off of Hummels and into the Dortmund net but, otherwise, it was a fairly anonymous showing from the Spaniard.

Jose Gimenez - 5.5

The best of Atletico's unimpressive defence. Showed his experience on numerous occasions and was unlucky to see his side concede so many.

Axel Witsel - 5

Struggled upon his return to Dortmund. Was undone multiple times and looked shaky with the ball at his feet.

Nahuel Molina - 5

Substituted at half-time after struggling to deal with Dortmund's attacks down the right-hand side.

Rodrigo De Paul - 6

Struggled in the first-half but looked far more assured in the second. Provided a lot of energy for Diego Simeone's side but, ultimately, it wasn't enough.

Koke - 6.5

The Atletico captain did his best to keep his side in the tie but failed allowed Sabitzer and Brandt to dictate the game from mdifield.

Marcos Llorente - 6.5

Battled well and kept running right until the end. Failed to create any significant chances but was unlucky to be on the losing side.

Antoine Griezmann struggled to break down the resolute Borussia Dortmund defence

Antoine Griezmann - 6

The Frenchman looked lively whenever he received the ball but that didn't come often enough. Faded as the game went on.

Alvaro Morata - 5

Was well-marshalled by the Dortmund defenders and struggled to make an impact up top before being replaced at the interval.
