Danny Ings is losing his race to face his former club Southampton on Thursday in another blow to under-pressure Aston Villa boss Dean Smith.
The forward, who left Saints to join Villa last summer, missed the 4-1 home defeat by West Ham with what Smith said was a 'soft tissue' injury and is unlikely to recover in time for the trip to St Mary's.

The 29-year-old was joined on the sidelines by midfielder Douglas Luiz who is also struggling to recover in time to take on Saints.
The absence of Ings, Luiz and Ezri Konsa - who is suspended after his red card on Sunday - deprives Villa of three key players in crucial areas of the team. However club captain Tyrone Mings - surprisingly dropped against West Ham - should be recalled immediately with Konsa suspended.
After four straight defeats, this week is looking like one of the most important of Smith's three-year tenure. After this fixture, Villa do not have a game for 15 days, when in-form Brighton visit Villa Park. Lose this, and Smith's future will hang in the balance.
