Premier League broadcasters beIN Sports have moved to sanction one of their pundits after an extraordinary on-air rant attacking the top-flight's Rainbow Laces campaign.

Mohammed Aboutrika has been reprimanded by the media group after launching into a two-minute tirade against the campaign designed to highlight LGBTQ+ issues and inclusivity within the game.

He has been warned over breaching editorial policy over personal views after a segment in which he described homosexuality as a 'dangerous ideology' and called for the channel to avoid showing any part of the campaign.

Aboutrika's words came after the broadcaster took the decision to highlight the campaign on their MENA coverage and will have caused deep embarrassment to the organisation who have been working to support causes across the region.

The comments carried by the Qatari-based broadcaster also raise questions as to the authenticity of claims that the World Cup 2022 is set to be the most inclusive ever held.

Speaking during Premier League coverage over the weekend, Aboutrika said: 'We give credit to many muslim players in the Premier League for not participating with what's happening in this LGBT campaign.

'This phenomenon is not only against Islam's nature, it's against Human nature.

'I hope that in the coming years, bein Sports channel, during those two LGBT campaign round, will only show the game live at the referee whistle, without studios to avoid everything LGBT related.

'Our role is to stand up to this phenomenon homosexuality because it's a dangerous ideology, and it's becoming nasty and people are not ashamed of it anymore.

'They will tell you that homosexuality is human rights. No it is not human rights, in fact it is against humanity.'

The beIN Media Group have moved to insist they completely disagree with the personal views aired by the former Egypt international.

'As a global media group we represent, champion and support people, causes and interests of every single background, language and cultural heritage across 43 hugely diverse countries, as we show every day,' a spokesperson said.

The campaign continues during this week's round of fixtures and while beIN Sports have not sacked Aboutrika, it remains unclear as to whether he will feature as a pundit over the next three days.

It is understood the Premier League have been in contact with their broadcast partner.

A spokesperson for the top flight said: ‘We wholeheartedly disagree with the pundit’s views. The Premier League and it’s clubs are committed to supporting LGBTQ+ inclusion and making clear football is for everyone.’

Aboutrika is the most iconic muslim player to come out of Egypt, and earned 100 caps for his country between 2001 and 2013 and is a former BBC African Footballer of the Year.

In 2017, he was added to Egypt's terro list over his alleged ties with the Muslim Bortherhood - a political movement that had been outlawed in the country.
