As was the trend in the Premier League's New Year's Day games, West Ham won away at Crystal Palace in a game that threw up some late drama at Selhurst Park.

With Manchester City having won at Arsenal with a stoppage-time winner and Tottenham doing the same at Watford, David Moyes' Hammers overcame a late storm from their hosts to claim a narrow win that should have been a lot more comfortable.

West Ham had led 3-0 until the 83rd minute, but spent stoppage time clinging on after Palace had scored twice late on to make their visitors sweat.

Michail Antonio put West Ham ahead midway through the first half, capitalising on a fine ball from Said Benrahma to finish. Then Manuel Lanzini doubled their lead with a bit of magic, taking some delicate touches in a crowded box before setting himself up to volley into the top corner.

Lanzini added a third on the stroke of half time after VAR intervened and Darren England awarded the Hammers a penalty that the Argentine converted.

Palace were on top as far as possession was concerned though. They had 62 percent of the ball and 22 shots to West Ham's 10, but it wasn't until late on that they made those statistics count for anything.

Michael Olise came off the bench and made an impact. Fifteen minutes after his introduction his cross from the right was turned in by Odsonne Edouard, and Olise then reduced the gap further with a curling cross-cum-shot from a similar area to where he had assisted moments earlier.

Jean-Philippe Mateta came close to an astonishing leveller as he saw an overhead kick go narrowly wide of the bottom corner in stoppage time.
