Liverpool travel to Villareal in the Champions League tonight chasing an unprecedented quadruple, while back home on Merseyside preparations are quietly underway for an almighty celebration should the historic feat be achieved.

No English club has ever landed the Premier League, Champions League, League Cup and FA Cup in one season.

The EFL Cup is already safely secured in the Anfield trophy cabinet and remarkably, the Reds are still in the running for the rest of the famous four.

And of course, Liverpool City Council wants to be ready to mark the moment with a city parade, if Jurgen Klopp's team achieve their extraordinary ambitions.

A report has gone to senior councillors in the local authority, asking them to sign off on preparations for a 'potential large scale short notice event in 2022.'

It adds that the need to arrange the event was 'identified during late April'.

Details of the celebration are included in a confidential section of the report. They have been kept under wraps because they could prove to 'be inaccurate until the event is confirmed as either proceeding or not taking place', says the report coyly.

Liverpool take a 2-0 lead to Spain following the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, last week.

If they complete an aggregate win over Villareal at the Estadio de la Cerámica tonight, they will face either Manchester City or Real Madrid in the final in Paris on May 28.

Before then, Liverpool meet Chelsea at Wembley in the FA Cup Final on Saturday May 14, while battling it out with City for the Premier League title.

The title race looks destined to go to the final day of the season on May 22, when Man City, who currently top the table by one point, host Aston Villa and Liverpool entertain Wolves.

The report to Friday's cabinet meeting at Liverpool City Council seeks permission for Culture Liverpool to 'lead on the organisation and delivery of a potential large scale public event during 2022.'

Liverpool, the city and the club, will be desperate to properly celebrate whatever success comes their way this season after their opportunity to party following the Premier League title in 2020 was impacted by the Covid pandemic.

Even so, thousands of fans celebrated with flares and fireworks after Manchester City lost to Chelsea at the end of June, confirming the Reds first league title in 30 years. When the players were finally presented with the trophy after beating Chelsea at home the following month, thousands more turned up at Anfield despite appeals to stay away.

This time, assuming Liverpool are successful, there will be the mother of all parties.

'In order to mobilise resources and undertake preparatory planning works to support the potential event, approval is required from Cabinet at the earliest opportunity,' the report states.

It adds: 'The report contains information relating to a potential large scale public event. Disclosure of the details prior to any event being confirmed would prejudice preparatory procurement actions and potentially be inaccurate until the event is confirmed as either proceeding or not taking place.'

The City of Liverpool staged raucous celebrations following the club's 2019 Champions League triumph over Tottenham. Celebrations began with an open-top bus tour and went on long into the night.

Last week, Liverpool legend Phil Thompson insisted the club could deliver the quadruple.

'I think it will be extremely hard to win the four, it's never been done before because of the simple reason it is so difficult,' said the former centre back, 68, who made 477 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool, winning seven league titles, three European Cups, three League Cups, two UEFA Cups, and an FA Cup during a stellar playing career with the club.

'If there's one club who could do it, because of the power of Anfield, it can be Liverpool Football Club.'

Speaking to Talksport, Thompson added: 'With the power of the fans, with the power of the players, the squad they have at the moment, the way Klopp has the bond with the club. Liverpool are the team that could do this. Klopp gets Liverpool, the city and the people in a massive way.

'To be successful, you have to have that bond with people. But it is also down to the players. You get nowhere if you haven't got good players... they've had this wonderful recruitment programme. When I look at our bench, I go 'wow'.'
