Dean Henderson departed Manchester United to join newly-promoted Nottingham Forest on loan this summer following a season wherein he featured in just five games with the Red Devils.

The talented goalkeeper has revealed that he asked the club to allow him try his luck elsewhere in search of playing time before discussing his role ahead of next season with new head coach Erik ten Hag.

"I didn't really want the manager to come in and be able to see me in training because I knew he'd probably want to keep me," Henderson told talkSPORT.

"The conversation I had [with Manchester United after Euro 2020] was 'you're coming here to be the no.1 goalkeeper'," Henderson claimed.

"I got COVID-19, cqme back, so I should have still been the no.1, but then unfortunately no one followed through with anything.

"It was so frustrating as well because I turned so many good loans down last summer for that reason, and they wouldn't let me go, so it was frustrating. To sit there and waste 12 months is criminal really at my age, I was fuming.

"But I worked hard off the pitch and on the training pitch to keep improving day in, day out, so I'm really excited to be back here and looking forward to the season with Forest."
