Liverpool 'inserted a special clause in Philippe Coutinho's sale to Barcelona, with club forced to pay £89m premium on top of hefty £142m fee for playmaker if they swooped for an Anfield star in the next two years'

  • Liverpool took drastic measures when selling Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona
  • Playmaker Coutinho was allowed to move to the Nou Camp for £142million
  • But when sanctioning the departure, Michael Edwards inserted a special clause
  • This would have seen Barcelona paying an £89m premium for other Reds stars

Liverpool inserted a special clause when selling Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in 2018, and this may affect the LaLiga club's chase of Naby Keita, reports say.

Coutinho was snapped up at the Nou Camp for a sensational £142million fee, but the playmaker has struggled to live up to his price tag and is likely to be on the move.

It has since emerged, however, that the Reds' transfer guru, Michael Edwards, sanctioned the sale on the condition that a hefty premium be imposed if Barcelona returned for another one of their players.

The Mirror claim that the premium would have totalled £89m and was imposed for the following two years after Coutinho was shipped off to Catalonia.

In doing this, Edwards effectively prevented Barcelona from pulling off the audacious swoops which saw them sign Luis Suarez and Javier Mascherano.

But after the term expired in 2020, the LaLiga giants are now able to move in for Jurgen Klopp's players, handing them a boost as they look to bring in Keita.

El Nacional have claimed that Xavi is keen to recruit Keita, who was signed by Liverpool for £50m in 2018, using a portion of the money from Coutinho's sale.

Since then, Keita has struggled to make a regular impact at the club, and his long-term future appears uncertain.

His contract is set to run down in the summer of 2023, and his lack of minutes may see manager Klopp decide to let him leave.

If so, Barcelona appear to be in pole position, with the same publication in Spain adding that they are on top of the pile.
