Liverpool fans on social media revel in their 'reserve' side completing the turnaround at Southampton to ensure the title race goes down to the final day as Jurgen Klopp praises his fringe players for 'outstanding' performance

  • Goals from Takumi Minamino and Joel Matip ensure Liverpool win at Soton
  • Nathan Redmond had given Southampton an early lead in the 13th minute
  • Win ensures Liverpool remain a point behind Manchester City ahead of final day

Liverpool supporters on social media praised the club's 'fringe' players for emerging through a trick test at Southampton to keep the title race alive.

The FA Cup winners had fallen behind early on to a Nathan Redmond strike in the 13th minute and it took two players who are not conventionally in the Liverpool limelight to pull them out of trouble.

Takumi Minamino's well-taken effort on 27 minutes brought the Reds level before Joel Matip found the winner midway through the second half with a stooping header from a corner.

Taking to social media, Liverpool fans praised the resilience of their team to come back despite missing some of their key players.

'Liverpool did a comeback with their second squad,' one supporter noted on Twitter.

While another wrote: 'Liverpool are comeback kings.'

With Jurgen Klopp forced to call upon the likes of Minamino, Harvey Elliot, Curtis James and the out-of-favour Roberto Firmino it appeared to be a test where it was conceivable that Liverpool's Quadruple hunt could finally hit a snag.

However, strong performances from all of those called upon impressed Klopp, who called his team's performance 'outstanding'.

'The way we played with nine changes is outstanding,' he said.

'Top game, unbelievable performance, nine changes. It worked out because of the players. If it hadn't worked out, it 1,000 per cent would have been my responsibility.'

Klopp went on to talk about Sunday, and said that if 'someone' wanted Liverpool to be 'champion' then they have to take care of their home game against Wolves.

Fans on Twitter, however, appeared to suggest that the comeback win all pointed towards it being Liverpool's destiny to clinch the league this weekend.

'It feels like it’s written in the stars that Liverpool will win the Premier League,' one fan wrote.

Manchester City host Aston Villa, managed by Steven Gerrard, and one supporter made the joke that 'maybe Gerald (sic) will finally win Premier league for Liverpool'.

Another fan agreed: 'Steven Gerrard will win the premier league for Liverpool, just bookmark this tweet,' they wrote.

Meanwhile, one fan was bold in their prediction, declaring that Liverpool would pip City to the league this weekend.

'Liverpool will win the league! Take or leave it...pls (sic) don't forget I said it here first,' they wrote.
