Alan Shearer has made a scathing assessment of Manchester United's domestic league season, saying the team failed at all levels.

The 2023-24 campaign came to a close on Sunday with Manchester City claiming a historic record fourth-straight Premier League title, with their neighbours struggling throughout, finishing eighth in the table – their lowest place since the formation of the Premier League back in 1992.

United's win against Brighton ensured they avoided the ignominy of registering the club's lowest points total in their league's history. Still, they ended up with a negative goal difference.

Man United players such as Andre Onana remained optimistic, saying that they 'have to stay positive', yet admitted it was a season to forget.

However, in the BBC's last Match of the Day of the season, Shearer gave a more punitive opinion on the Red Devils' season, especially in the Premier League.

When comparing the team's performance to last year, where they finished third and won the Carabao Cup, Shearer's mentions the regression of points and goals conceded.

'I know they've had injuries as well but goals conceded, how worse off in points they are, games lost, it's been a really, really poor season,' said Alan Shearer.

United achieved 15 fewer points than in the Premier League 2022-23 season, scoring practically the same amount of goals yet conceding 15 extra goals.

'They've been really poor in every department.'

'I know they've got the FA cup final next weekend, but in terms of the league, it's been a disaster really.'

The statistics suggest a lower level of performance compared to the prior year despite the fact that Erik ten Hag insists that Manchester United are in a better position than they were 12 months ago.

When asked whether the Dutch manager will continue next season, former England and Arsenal striker, Ian Wright, feels confounded as the coach's future remains uncertain.

'It's interesting because he's got a year left,' said Ian Wright.

'It feels for me if they've got a project that they're going to start, or they're going to get rid of the manager, either they've got to move him on now and start the project or give him a new deal. What's going on with that?'
