Karim Benzema said even though Real Madrid did not play well, they were happy with the 2-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

“The most important thing is the three points, we didn’t play well and we won. Sometimes you can’t play well, it’s normal that the fans want us to, that we attack and score goals. We tried but it didn’t go off,” he said. “Playing every three days is difficult.”

Benzema scored twice as Real Madrid beat 2-1 Shakhtar Donetsk to edge closer to the last 16 of the Champions League. 

Madrid top Group D with nine points from four games, while Shakhtar are bottom with just one point. Sheriff (six points) and Inter (four points) meet later on Wednesday. 

Both of Benzema's goals were set up by Vinicius, with Madrid's new strike partnership once again coming up with the goods for Carlo Ancelotti. 

Benzema opened the scoring in the 14th minute but Shakhtar levelled through Fernando just before the break. 

However, Benzema restored Madrid's lead just after the hour and Los Blancos closed out the three points at the Santiago Bernabeu. 

France striker Benzema now has 13 goals and eight assists in 14 appearances this season, while Vinicius has nine goals and five assists after setting up both goals here.
