Fans may not be able to see what is hidden beneath the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu's pitch during Real Madrid's games, but the lower level of the ground is still a construction site where cranes and construction material are stored.
In that underground space, builders are working on the construction of an underground 'greenhouse' where the retractable lawn will be stored while other types of events take place at the Bernabeu.
The fans' return to the stands prevented builders from finishing all the work they had planned to do, and on days when Real Madrid are not playing a game, the underground area is converted again into a construction site.
Real Madrid have shared images of the lower level of the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, where lighting and irrigation systems have been installed to preserve the retractable lawn.
Around 40 people are working every day in eight-hour shifts to remove soil from the underground construction site, with their objective being to have the rail system for the retractable lawn ready by June.
The new retractable pitch and roof will allow Real Madrid to financially exploit their stadium 365 days per year by organising concerts, sporting events and congresses on the pitch when the football team are not playing a game.
Los Blancos are also contemplating the possibility of transforming their stadium into a basketball court for their team to play midweek EuroLeague games.
