Inter kept the pressure on Serie A leaders, Napoli, with a victory away to Venezia on Saturday evening, with the defending champions being forced to battle hard for the three points which leave them one behind both the Naples club and city rivals, AC Milan.

It was a match of relative comfort for the Nerazzurri, at least in the first half, with Hakan Calhanoglu opening the scoring after half an hour of play.

The Turkish midfielder put the ball into the net with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area, leaving Sergio Romero with no chance to prevent the goal.

The match then became a tale of missed opportunities for the Nerazzurri, with Milan Skriniar having a header cleared off the line and Edin Dzeko forcing a smart save out of the former Manchester United stopper, Romero.

A second Inter goal appeared to be simply a matter of time, yet the hosts started to find their feet in the match as the visitors grew visibly nervous.

Another missed chance came through Federico Dimarco, who hit a shot straight at Romero, whilst Venezia would then panic Inter's backline with a couple of sharp crosses across the face of goal.

In the fifth minute of injury time, Inter would get their chance to kill the match from the penalty spot, with a handball being given after the intervention of VAR.

Lautaro Martinez took the kick and rifled the ball home into the left side of the net, securing all three points for Simone Inzaghi's charges.

With Juventus losing to Atalanta earlier in the day, it was important for Inter not to slip up and let the Bergamo club closer to them in the table.

However, with AC Milan and Napoli both having games in hand, Inter will continue to play catch-up in the coming weeks.
