England outcast Ben White looks a world away from Gareth Southgate's Euro squad axe drama as he relaxes on holiday with his wife after rejecting a call-up

Ben White's wife, Milly, shared a snap of the pair on holiday on the day the England squad for Euro 2024 was announced.

Gareth Southgate revealed his 26-man squad on Thursday evening, with the likes of Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire surprise omissions from the side that will look to win the Three Lions' first major trophy since 1966.

White's England future remains unclear, after Southgate revealed in the March international break that the defender has chosen to make himself unavailable for selection.

He was thus not considered for the summer's squad, meaning he will enjoy some time off before returning to pre-season training with Arsenal in a few weeks' time.

The 26-year-old has seemingly jetted away to relax prior to that, with his mind far away from the Euros as he was seen enjoying the sun as his country's squad for the summer's tournament was named.

Revealed: What England No 2 Steve Holland 'said to Ben White at Qatar World Cup in front of team-mates'... which 'eventually led to him withdrawing'

The photo was shared at around 5pm on Thursday, with England's squad confirmed at 7pm.

Southgate had the task of trimming his 33-man squad down to 26, with the likes of James Maddison already leaving the camp after finding out he had not made the cut.

Asked if he spoke to White ahead of picking his squad, Southgate replied: 'No. As far as I am aware he's not available to us.'

In March, Southgate said Arsenal sporting director Edu had informed him White - capped four times by his country - did not want to play for the Three Lions at the present time.

He has not played internationally since returning from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar 'for personal reasons' after Southgate's assistant Steve Holland reportedly made a 'barbed comment' at his expense in front of the squad.

White played 51 times in all competitions as Arsenal pushed Manchester City close in the Premier League title race, as the Gunners again fell short, eventually finishing second in the table.

His ability to play at centre back as well as right back would potentially have been useful for Southgate at the Euros in Germany.

Instead, the England boss called up the Liverpool youngster Jarell Quansah and uncapped Everton man Jarrad Branthwaite into his provisional squad, though both were eventually cut.

England midfielder Declan Rice, meanwhile, said in March that he would speak to White upon his return to Arsenal, hopeful that his club team-mate would eventually agree to end his exile.

He said: 'The only thing I can say is it's Ben's life. It's Ben's decision. We can't argue with him, with what he wants to do. Of course, there's always going to be people writing stuff, having their opinions on what on what they think.

'But at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is what he thinks and at this moment in time, he obviously doesn't want to play for England.'

'It's really for Ben now,' Southgate added. 'Dec is obviously in a difficult situation you're asking him about a team-mate and he's going to be careful what he says. As I've said to you, the door is open for us.

'That's clearly difficult ahead of the Euros, where you've got players that have played all the way through but we have no idea of knowing who's going to be available in that area of the pitch.

'I respected the situation as Arsenal have contacted us. So in the end, I know the conversation I had with him last March. I felt I should back away from it a little bit. But I've always left the door open. I was keen to bring him in this camp.'

Reports have suggested that the rift was sparked by Holland questioning White's interest in football while they were out in Qatar.

Southgate's assistant reportedly asked Kyle Walker a question related to Manchester City's performances in the previous season, before posing the same question to White regarding Arsenal.

White allegedly said he did not know the answer, leading Holland to claim that was down to his lack of interest in football.

The conversation is said to have happened in front of other members of the squad.

Amid White's denial to be part of the England squad, Kyle Walker is the only recognised right back in the Three Lions squad travelling to Germany.

Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold is also in the squad, but is listed as a midfielder and has regularly been used in that role in recent months under Southgate.

Ezri Konsa has filled in there for both his club - Aston Villa - and country, while there is debate around who will fill in at centre back with Maguire injured.

White would perhaps have been first choice to partner John Stones, but the likes of Konsa, Marc Guehi, Lewis Dunk and Joe Gomez will now battle it out.
