Erik ten Hag press conference recap

Lots to unpick there, so what can we take from that Erik ten Hag press conference?

Here are the top headlines:

  • Martinez set for a spell on the sidelines
  • 'Wembley of the North' ambition is good but focusing on team
  • Wants his side to treat every game as a final from now on
  • Villa fixture too soon for Mount and Malacia

Villa too soon for Mount and Malacia

Ten Hag has revealed Sunday comes too soon for Mason Mount and Tyrell Malacia.

Mason (Mount) and Ty (Malacia) not ready.

The future is bright for the young Red Devils

Erik ten Hag has been asked about Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund.

I think they enjoy to play together, adventure, they want to do it together. They want also to pass the ball to each other and that everyone can play to the qualities and score goals. It is brilliant they want to do it together and that is the key. Young players the future for Manchester United is quite bright with talent on board, you have to develop it.

This club wants to achieve a lot, this club wants to win trophies so very ambitious so they have to step up and bring high levels. Also against the best opposition they have to express the same threat and it is about end product.

'Every game is a final from now on'

I said to the team from the start of January every game is now a final. That was also our approach to West Ham, this is a final, we have to take this challenge and see it as a final. That will be every day now from on.

Last time Manchester United faced Aston Villa, Rasmus Hojlund netted his first Premier League goal as United came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in dramatic style on Boxing day.

Does Erik ten Hag think it will be a similar story this time?

To relive that match, read the match report here:

Who will replace Martinez in the side?

We have options. How to deal with that position. We have good centre halves in our squad so the others are available, Luke (Shaw) can play also there. Quite confident we can keep the process going so others can fulfil the position and also contribute playing in high levels. Those players are experienced.

Garnacho and Hojlund's rise in form

Players need time, especially young players like Rasmus (Hojlund) and Alejandro (Garnacho), they need time but also they need a team, so those effects were not there in the first half of the season.

From the start I was confident they have the potential to do what they are doing and now it is about keeping going keep moving be hungry.

'Wembley of the North ambition is good - but not my task'

If that is his (Jim Ratcliffe) view then I would say it expresses the ambition of this club which is good, but it is not my task in this club to deal with stadium questions, with facilities, my job is to manage the team and rebuild the squad.

'Licha is a fighter': Martinez set for a spell on the sidelines

It is a setback of course, Licha (Martinez) was returning, you see his contribution to the team when he is playing, apart from the technical skills also the mentality.

It is a big setback for Licha, he is very disappointed but he is a fighter. He will be back, stronger back and will play by the end of the season. As a a squad we have to replace him and we have players who can play there and will play there.

What is on Erik ten Hag's mind?

Will Thiago Alcantara ever play for Liverpool again?

With the news that Thiago Alcantara is set for another spell on the sidelines, the question is, will he ever pull on that famous red jersey again?

With his contract up in the summer, and his track record with injuries, I wouldn't put your money on that he will. Or am I speaking too soon?

Liverpool fans, look away now...

Thiago Alcantara is reportedly facing more time away from the pitch after sustaining a muscle injury during his five-minute cameo return against Arsenal.

The Spaniard returned to action in the Reds’ 3-1 loss at Arsenal. They were his first minutes in a Liverpool shirt in 10 months after a hip problem.

I think Conor Gallagher's reaction to Enzo Fernandez's free-kick is how most of us reacted too - maybe not Aston Villa Fans though.

I'm glad there were no camera's pointing at me in the office yesterday, I let out a gasp and a little noise when I saw it. An extraordinary strike.

What is the most bizarre transfer involving a Premier League star in football history?

Following Jesse Lingard’s surprise move to FC Seoul, we want to hear your opinions on what the strangest transfer involving a Premier League star in football history was.
