A much changed Barcelona side were beaten on penalties by Boca Juniors in Tuesday's Diego Maradona Cup in Saudi Arabia.

Matheus Pereira and Guillem Jaume missed from the spot as Boca won 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time.

Ferran Jutgla's first goal for Barça had opened the scoring but Exequiel Zeballos's equaliser took the game straight to a shootout.

Marcos Rojo, Carlos Izquierdoz, Cristian Pavon and Aaron Molinas, while Dani Alves and Jutgla netted for Barça.

However, Matheus' effort was saved by Agustin Rossi and Guillem fired over the bar to hand the trophy to the Argentine side.

The game took place in Riyadh and was arranged to pay homage to the late Maradona, who died last year and represented both clubs during his playing career.

Barça coach Xavi Hernandez made 11 changes to the side that drew 2-2 with Osasuna on Sunday, including handing a second debut to Dani Alves.

Ter Stegen, Pique, Umtiti, Frenkie de Jong, Sergio Busquets, Luuk de Jong and Ousmane Dembele were all left in the stands ahead of Saturday's game against Elche.

Barça shaded the first half with Alves, at 38, impressing, but the game really came alive after the break.

Jutgla opened the scoring and could have had another, while Ilias also came close.

Boca were a threat on the counter and Neto denied Villa before substitute Zeballos scored to take the game to penalties.
