Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman reveals he was too NERVOUS to watch Real Madrid take on Sevilla and switched over to Milan v Juventus after 20 minutes because he'd 'rather know the result when it ends' as LaLiga title race goes down to the wire

  • Barcelona drew with Atletico Madrid as they missed the chance to go top
  • However, Zinedine Zidane's men wasted a chance to move first themselves
  • Los Blancos came from behind twice - but could only draw against Sevilla
  • Ronald Koeman decided to switch over to Serie A for a more relaxing spectacle
  • AC Milan defeated Juventus 3-0 to move above their opponents and into third
  • Serie A's top-four battle will be tense, with Atalanta facing Milan on the final day

Barcelona head coach Ronald Koeman has revealed that he was too nervous to watch fellow LaLiga title contenders Real Madrid and Sevilla battle it out on Sunday, preferring instead to watch the high-stakes Serie A clash between Juventus and AC Milan

Koeman's side had drawn 0-0 at home at leaders Atletico Madrid the previous day, leaving the door open for Real, who would have gone top if they had defeated Julen Lopetegui's men.

Fernando Reges put the visitors ahead midway through the first half and it wasn't until 67 minutes that Zinedine Zidane's charges equalised through Marco Asensio.

Sevilla were then awarded a contentious penalty following a VAR review after a corner had hit Eder Militao on the hand, with Karim Benzema earning his side a spot kick before play was brought back and former Barca midfielder Ivan Rakitic converted with ease.

Los Blancos did equalise in the 94th minute after Toni Kroos' long-range effort flicked off the boot of Eden Hazard, but their city rivals still sit top of the pile with just three games to go.

Despite the relevance of the match to Barcelona, Koeman told reporters ahead of Tuesday's trip to Levante: 'I watched the first 20 minutes of Madrid and then I watched Milan against Juventus instead because it makes me a little nervous to see the other teams. I'd rather watch another game and know the result when it ends.'

That leaves LaLiga looking very much like a three-horse race heading into the last few games of the season, with Sevilla on hand to pounce if all three sides capitulate.

In the former Everton manager's match of choice, Milan leapfrogged Juve and moved third as the race for next season's Champions League intensified after they beat the Old Lady 3-0 thanks to stunning strikes by Brahim Diaz and Ante Rebic and a first goal in Italy from Fikayo Tomori.

With Inter Milan already confirmed as title winners, the fight is on for the other top-four spots.

Atalanta - who face AC Milan on the final day - are on 72 points and are only above Stefano Pioli's men on goal difference.

Fourth-placed Napoli are two points below the pair, with Juventus in fifth on 69 points.

The Turin-based side would miss out on the Champions League for the first time in 10 years if they stay where they are.

Finally, outsiders Lazio sit on 64 points, but do have a game in hand at home to Torino on May 18.

The game was rearranged after the visitors failed to show up for the original fixture in March after the local health authorities told Torino not to travel to the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma wanted to be awarded a 3-0 win as a result of Torino's no-show, but this plea was rejected by Italy's Sports Court of Appeal.
