Barcelona vice-president Eduard Romeu has opened the door for Lionel Messi to return to the club, stating it would be viable from an economic point of view.

For months there has been talk about whether the Argentine could return to the Blaugrana once his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires at the end of the season.

While they are only rumours at the moment, that hasn't stopped Barcelona president Joan Laporta from discussing the matter on more than one occasion.

In an interview with El Mati de Catalunya Radio, Romeu has once again reignited hope of seeing Messi in a Blaugrana shirt.

"If he were to return, he would come for free, so it would certainly be viable," he said. "In any case, it is a technical decision and the player's decision."

The club's situation

As for Barcelona's financial situation, Romeu says they are heading in the right direction.

"We have totally changed the structure," he said. "From having players with big salaries, and a large squad with a high average age, we now have players that fit without our structure, which will surely be important.

"Without sounding presumptuous, we have saved Barcelona but we are not financially healthy. We need a lot of austerity and rigor and there is still a lot of work to do.

"Barcelona will be healthy in these next five years. In 2024/25 we will be at the level that we deserve to be in."
