Absolute tranquility and astonishment. These are Barcelona's two reactions to reports coming out of Germany that the Catalan club could potentially receive a sanction from UEFA to expel them from the Champions League for violation of financial regulations.

Sources from inside the Blaugrana outfit say "there is no record" of any notice warning them they could be expelled before the publication of the German newspaper Die Welt. The newspaper claimed that UEFA officials have described the economic balance presented by Barcelona as a 'disaster'.

The possible sanction that could be imposed on the LaLiga champions may see them banned from the Champions League for 'two or three years'. According to Die Welt, a source from UEFA said: "The greater the [financial] loss, the greater the penalty."

Why are Barcelona potentially facing UEFA sanctions?

At its general assembly in October, Barcelona officially announced a net profit of 304 million after taxes. It was an amount achieved, to a large extent, after completing the third and fourth of the famous 'levers'.

The sale of 15 per cent of LaLiga's rights for the next 25 years to Sixth Street and the transfer of another important percentage of Barca Studios were reviewed and approved by LaLiga.

However, according to UEFA's financial regulations, only sales that can be directly attributed to and derived from the soccer business are decisive, so these figures cannot be taken into account, and would therefore result in an alleged violation.

Barcelona officials are keeping calm because they believe their numbers are transparent and conform to the requirements of UEFA. Additionally, they are not aware of the possible sanction and expulsion from the Champions League.

They are confident that they have acted correctly at an economic level and are focused on sporting recovery. But there is no denying that a ban from Europe's top competition, in a period where Barca have struggled for financial stability, would do massive damage to their reputation and bank balance.
