Celtic close in on club-record £11m deal for Belgian midfielder Engels

Celtic are poised to break their club transfer record after agreeing an £11million deal to sign Belgian midfielder Arne Engels from Augsburg.

The Parkhead side were also pushing ahead with a deadline-busting move to sign Sheffield United centre-back Auston Trusty in a deal which could be worth up to £6m.

With the window set to close tonight, the double swoop for Engels and Trusty comes after Celtic learned their Champions League fate in yesterday’s draw.

Brendan Rodgers’ side avoided most of the big guns and were drawn into a section alongside Aston Villa, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Atalanta, Young Boys, Dinamo Zagreb and Slovan Bratislava.

Now the Celtic manager will be looking to bring in reinforcements as he looks to make an impact in Europe after last season’s disappointing efforts.

A Belgian Under-21 international, Engels has spent the past year playing in the German Bundesliga with Augsburg.

But he is now poised to move to Glasgow, with the £11m fee topping the £9m Celtic paid for Odsonne Edouard back in 2018.

He will become the replacement for Matt O’Riley, who left to join Brighton last week for a Scottish record fee of £25m plus add-ons.

Trusty, meanwhile, is a 26-year-old American centre-back who joined Sheffield United for a fee of £5m from Arsenal last year.

He was one of their better performers despite being the club being relegated from the Premier League.

A naturally left-footed player who is equally comfortable at centre-back or left-back, Trusty would provide cover and depth across the left side of Celtic’s defence.

They have already added left-back Alex Valle, the 20-year-old who has joined on loan from Barcelona.

Valle will compete with Greg Taylor for the jersey at left-back but insists he would be ready for a baptism of firm in Sunday’s Old Firm clash if he were to be selected.

‘I know what this game in Scotland means and I am looking forward to living it,’ said Valle.

‘Yeah, I feel ready. I played in the Mini Clasico [Barcelona youth versus Real Madrid youth]. For us as youngsters, it was like El Real Clasico.

‘I’m from Barcelona and I grew up a supporter. I know the tension of the derby game. I am looking forward to experiencing it here.’
