Wojciech Szczesny is reportedly set to step out of retirement to join Barcelona following the injury to Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The Polish shot-stopper decided to retire after his Juventus contract was terminated in August, but will now make a shock return to playing at one of the world's biggest clubs.

He will undergo a medical with the Catalan side on Monday before completing all formalities, according to the Telegraph

Ter Stegen, 32, was stretchered off during Barca's 5-1 rout of Villarreal last week and is unlikely to play again this season.

The German international has torn the patellar tendon - which connects the kneecap to the shinbone - in his right knee and was tested at hospital in Villarreal.

Szczesny was amongst a shortlist of names to step into the void between the posts at the LaLiga and Champions League competitors, as well as former Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

Szczesny last week admitted that 'it would be disrespectful on my part not to consider' the offer made by Barcelona.

'I greatly respect the history of Barca. it is one of the best clubs in the world,'. the 34-year-old told Spanish outlet SPORT

'I understand the difficult situation that has arisen after Marc-André ter Stegen's injury and I think it would be disrespectful on my part not to consider this option.'

Szczesny previously announced he was to quit the game in August after his contract with Juventus had been mutually terminated at the end of last season.

He amassed 84 caps for Poland and made 200 appearances for Juventus over seven years having joined from Arsenal for £12.5million.
