US Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker has revealed that United States men's national team head coach Gregg Berhalter is again on speaking terms with star midfielder Giovanni Reyna -- and Reyna is expected to rejoin the USMNT next month ahead of October friendlies.
Reyna and his family were displeased with the 20-year-old's lack of playing time at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and revealed a domestic abuse incident from 1991 involving Berhalter, in which he kicked his eventual wife Rosalind. The revelation contributed to US Soccer's decision not to renew Berhalter's contract last year, and his return to the touchline in June reignited concerns that Reyna would be frozen out of future USMNT squads.
USSF sporting director Matt Crocker says that Gregg Berhalter and Gio Reyna have met to move their relationship forward, with Reyna set to be called into the next camp for which he's healthy. "“I think both Greg and Gio are in a good place to move forward," Crocker said. #usmnt

"A way forward" between Berhalter and Reyna
In a call with media on Sunday, Crocker said that constructive conversations have taken place between Berhalter and Reyna, and the relationship between the two men is being patched up.
"I can't wait for (Reyna) to be in camp so we can stop talking about this. ... I think both Gregg and Gio are in a good place to move forward and that's the best thing to say. There's a way forward," Crocker said. "Clearly, there's been a lot of emotions over the last 12 months, but the common connection is they both want the program to be successful."

Crocker commended Berhalter and Reyna for their professionalism during their recent dialogue -- with harmony between the two viewed as critical for the USMNT ahead of a big year in 2024. The US has CONCACAF Nations League commitments later this year, in addition to the 2024 Copa America and qualification matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
"There is a clear way forward and a professional way of working and they're both ready," Crocker said. "Gio's looking forward to the next camp, since he's fit, and Gregg's looking forward to working with him, the same as all the staff and all the players that want to welcome him back."
When will Reyna play again?
Reyna has yet to step foot on the pitch for Borussia Dortmund this season. He suffered a hairline fracture in his right leg during the CONCACAF Nations League final against Canada in June, but he's been ramping up his recovery in recent weeks and is on the verge of his first competitive action this season.
Reyna was included in Dortmund's squad to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League, and he also made the bench to face Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga last weekend. He could finally receive his first minutes of the campaign on Friday as BVB visit Hoffenheim in matchday six action.
