Bayern Munich were left to rue their early missed chances at the Red Bull Arena on Sunday night as the Bundesliga returned to action 68 days after its last match with a 1-1 draw between the league leaders and RB Leipzig.
Following the World Cup, this top-of-the-table clash pitted Julian Nagelsmann against his former club, but he was unable to get the desired result.
Bayern gave a debut to Yann Sommer, who only joined the club from Borussia Monchengladbach on Thursday, as a replacement for the injured Manuel Neuer, but he could not keep out the home team.
Bayern's missed chances
For much of the first half, it was one-way traffic with Bayern Munich dominating possession and the chances.
After only seven minutes, Serge Gnabry hit the post with a powerful shot, while Leon Goretzka later had a goal ruled out for an offside in the build-up.
Eventually, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting broke the deadlock at the far post as he bundled the ball in past Janis Blaswich from a Gnabry cross.
Leipzig draw level
Despite all of the first-half chances, it was the home team who started the second period brighter.
After seven minutes, they found the equaliser as Dominik Szoboszlai headed Andre Silva's cross into the path of Marcel Halstenberg to beat Yann Sommer on his Bayern debut.
The hosts had another chance only minutes later, with Dani Olmo's low shot saved by Sommer, with Timo Werner and Konrad Laimer also going close in the final stages.
The result means that Leipzig maintain the pressure on the title race as they sit only six points behind Bayern, but it also means that a win for Freiburg at Wolfsburg on Saturday could reduce Bayern's lead to just two points.
