Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen are eternal: Finish the Bundesliga undefeated

Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen have gone from Bundesliga champions to 'Invincibles' after finishing the season unbeaten with a 2-1 win over Augsburg on Saturday.

With 28 victories and six draws, Leverkusen have become the first team in German history to the entire campaign without defeat. It's an achievement not even Bayern Munich - with 11 Bundesliga titles in a row - could match.

In Europe's top five leagues, only Juventus (2011-12) in the Serie A and Arsenal (2003-04) in the English Premier League had achieved it before. Leverkusen will now join them in this exclusive club, which includes other members such as Preston (1888-89), AC Milan (1991-92), Athletic (1929-30) and Real Madrid (1931-32).

The former Real Sociedad man has transformed Bayer into a reliable, impassable team that plays with character and crushes opponents with its high-intensity football.

That was reflected in how they scored 17 goals beyond the 90-minute mark that saved their unbeaten record.

51 games unbeaten and counting

Alonso, who arrived in 2022 to find Leverkusen in the relegation zone, has propelled the 'Werkself' back to the top of Germany in the space of a year and a half, guiding the club to their first Bundesliga in its 119-year history.

By doing so, the Guipuzcoan has banished the chronic 'Neverkusen' chronic jinx - turning them into 'Neverlusen' - and the show is not over yet. They have a historic treble in their sights after 51 matches without defeat in all competitions, which is already a new record in European football, and it just keeps going.

Alonso has already established himself as a legend at the BayArena and as such, he was bathed in beer on the pitch after the game, as the joined the fans in the stands to celebrate.

They did fall one point short of the Bundesliga record of 91 points in a season, set by Bayern under Jupp Heynckes in 2012-13. It is one of the few records that have escaped Alonso and his Bayer side, but they won't mind if they finish the season unbeaten and with three trophies.
