Real Madrid were handed their first defeat in all competitions on Tuesday night, falling 3-2 to Leipzig in the Champions League.

The Spanish giants got their night started on the wrong foot, falling behind 2-0 before the 20th minute of play.

Although Vinicius cut into the deficit just before the break, Timo Werner came off the bench to seal the deal for the German side in the 81st minute, as Rodrygo's penalty with the last kick of the game changed little.

Leipzig started the match comfortably on the ball and opened the scoring after 16 minutes.

Dominik Szoboszlai's corner was met by Andre Silva and stopped by Thibaut Courtois, but the Real Madrid goalkeeper could do nothing to stop Josip Gvardiol from nodding home.

Courtois was immediately called into action to deny by a brilliant left-footed curler by Amadou Haidara, though he could do nothing to stop Leipzig from scoring two minutes later.

From a corner the ball somewhat fortuitously dropped to Christopher Nkunku, and he smashed his strike off the underside of the bar.

Just when it seemed Leipzig would head into the break up by two, Real Madrid clawed one back with a well-taken header from Vinicius.

Marco Asensio's cross from the right found the Brazilian at the penalty spot, and he expertly floated his effort past Janis Blaswich.

Pressing for equaliser

Real Madrid pushed forward in search of an equaliser after the break, but Carlo Ancelotti's men struggled to create much in terms of clear cut chances.

In fact, it was Leipzig that came close to extending their lead, Werner firing a shot across the face of goal that went just wide of the far post.

The home side wrapped up proceedings in the 81st minute after a bursting run forward by Mohamed Simakan.

The Frenchman then slid a ball across the face of goal, with Werner getting in-between Courtois and the defence to tap home.

Rodrygo scored a penalty with what was the last kick of the game for Real Madrid, who remain top of the group on 10 points, with Leipzig now just one behind.

However, the German side, unlike Los Blancos, have yet to clinch a spot in the knockout round, as they need one point on the final day when they take on Shakhtar, who drew 1-1 with Celtic in the other Group F match.
