Patience paid off for Manchester City as they ground out a second-leg draw to complete a quarter-final victory over both legs as they battled Bayern Munich to a 1-1 tie.

Pep Guardiola returned to his former club to take on Thomas Tuchel and held out after their 3-0 first leg win.

That was despite the first major chance falling to Leroy Sane against his former club, but his shot was dragged wide and City began to settle.

Penalty miss

With 10 minutes to go to half-time and Bayern dominating the chances, Dayot Upamecano gave the best chance to Manchester City as Ilkay Gundogan's shot hit his arm.

The French defender was shown a yellow card and a penalty was awarded, but Erling Haaland's effort from 12 yards went high above the bar.

It gave a lifeline to the home team, who remained three goals down on aggregate and had failed to take their chances in the first period.

Even on the stroke of half-time, Kingsley Coman and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting had desperate efforts blocked in the box.

Haaland's strike

City's chances were few and far between and they, unusually, had less possession than their German opponents.

However, they looked lethal down the left flank on the counter and it was just that kind of move which allowed Haaland to turn Upamecano inside out on the edge of the box.

With that, he fired beyond Yann Sommer into the roof of the net to give the Citizens the lead on the night and extend their advantage over two legs.

Kimmich's spot kick

Unlike Haaland, Bayern didn't make any mistake as they were awarded a penalty as Sadio Mane, who replaced Leroy Sane as a substitute, had a shot blocked by Manuel Akanji's arm.

VAR awarded a spot kick and Joshua Kimmich coolly slotted the ball down the middle with seven minutes left on the clock.

Despite the late scare, City saw out the result to win 4-1 on aggregate and allowed Tuchel to rant and rave on the touchline as he was sent off for his dissent towards referee Clement Turpin.

A calmer Guardiola watched on as his side sealed a rematch of last season's semi-final against Real Madrid for a place in the final.
