Chelsea's American owners 'are holding fresh talks over their £1.5bn stadium project with a complete rebuild of Stamford Bridge the most likely option at present' with Todd Boehly and Co desperate to have one of the best arenas in world football

  • New US owners are aiming to have one of the best stadiums by 2030 at earliest
  • Most likely option is reportedly to knock down Stamford Bridge and rebuild site

Chelsea's American owners are reportedly holding fresh talks over their £1.5billion stadium project, with a complete rebuild of Stamford Bridge the most likely option at the moment.

As Graham Potter and Chelsea continued their quite dismal season with defeat to London rivals Tottenham on the weekend, the club face even greater dilemmas off the pitch.

Todd Boehly and co-owner Behdad Eghbali are determined for Chelsea to have one of the best stadiums in world football - with 2030 the earliest possible date to move in to a new home.

According to the Telegraph, knocking down the iconic Stamford Bridge and rebuilding a stadium on the existing site looks to be the most likely option at present but this has by no means been signed off.

There are three proposals for Boehly and Co to consider: a complete rebuild of the Bridge, redeveloping the stadium or relocating.

The project which could shape the club's future is being headed up by Jonathan Goldstein, a member of the Chelsea board, and Janet Marie Smith, the executive vice president of planning and development for the LA Dodgers.

Goldstein is said to be holding talks with powerful fans group Chelsea Pitch Owners (CPO) as they wait to hear whether the club have been successful in their £50m bid to buy a 1.2 acre plot of land next to the Bridge.

If the club can successfully takeover the land currently owned by housing association Stoll, it would be a massive boost to their hopes of rebuilding on the current site, giving space for at least a 55,000-seater stadium, fan parks and offices.

Boehly and Clearlake Capital have made it clear relocation would only happen with consent from the CPO, meaning tearing down Stamford Bridge and rebuilding a stadium  - as former owner Roman Abramovich intended to do - seems the most likely option.

This would be the option that would be most supported by fans and the CPO - with relocation the least favoured. One problem is where Chelsea would play during this period, with moving into Wembley or temporarily groundsharing with Fulham at 30,000-seater Craven Cottage two possible options.

Fans would also get behind redeveloping Stamford Bridge, but this is unlikely given the lack of space available around the west London stadium.

Chair of the CPO Chris Isitt told the Telegraph: 'The CPO is having positive talks with the club about redevelopment. We understand this is a complicated project which needs careful consideration, but we share the common aim, which is to have the best stadium in London.'

Planning permission to expand Stamford Bridge to a 60,000 capacity expired under Abramovich's leadership of the club.

The Bridge is significantly smaller than the rest of the 'Big Six' in the Premier League and previous owner Abramovich had considered a new ground to bring them up to the same level as their main rivals.

The new owners - who took over in May 2022 - also want to improve facilities at their Cobham training ground, which opened 15 years ago in 2007.
