Emma Hayes conceded the Women’s Super League title race is all but over after her Chelsea team were defeated by Liverpool last night.

The result means it is advantage Manchester City, who are six points clear at the top, having played a game more than their rivals.

Hayes is now facing the prospect of ending her final season at Chelsea without silverware, unless City drop points in their remaining two fixtures.

‘I’ve had amazing memories at this football club,’ Hayes said. ‘We’ve won a lot of things and I’d love to bring titles again to Chelsea but that’s not going to be this year I’m afraid.

'My job now is to prepare the team for the last few games to continue to compete and enjoy.

‘We will never give up. But the title is far from us, it’s not in our hands. I think City are deserving, their consistency has put them in that position.

Chelsea had led at half-time after an early goal from Aggie Beever-Jones, but Liverpool levelled through Sophie Roman Haug after the break before Gemma Bonner put the Reds ahead.

An incredible end to the game then saw four goals in 12 minutes. Beever-Jones levelled for Chelsea before Leanne Kiernen went down the other end to restore Liverpool’s lead instantly.

Chelsea equalised once more when Catarina Macario’s shot deflected off Liverpool goalkeeper Teagan Micah. But with nine minutes added on, Bonner won it for the Reds as she headed home from a corner - leaving Hayes with her head in her hands.
