Joe Cole proved that age is just a number as he scored a stunning goal as part of a team of Premier League All Stars during a Sunday league charity match.

The former Chelsea star took to the field as part of a team of ex-professionals raising money for the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Fund.

But despite the tie against SE Dons being in aid of a good cause, Cole showed no mercy against his opposition.

Footage circulated on social media on Saturday of the 42-year-old coolly controlling a high ball down off his chest, before lobbing the goalkeeper with an looped volley off the top of his boot.

Sporting the No 10 the attacking midfielder wore for much of his career, the unstoppable goal had fans rubbing their eyes and wondering if the clocks had been reset to the mid-2000s.

Another added: 'Every now and then you're reminded the levels these pros play/played at. That's outrageous.'

A third agreed: 'Class is permanent, just effortless what a player!'

Some even compared the effort to one of Cole's most sublime contributions in an England shirt - his strike against Sweden at the 2006 World Cup.

As on the unkempt pitch in Bishop Stortford, on the biggest stage of all Cole brought the ball down off his chest and produced a high, curling shot which Andreas Isaksson had no hope of stopping.

Cole's nine-year stint in an England shirt saw the former West Ham youth prospect win 56 caps and score 10 times.

After calling time on his career at Stamford Bridge in 2010, Cole moved to Liverpool for three seasons, before spells at Lille, Aston Villa, and MLS side Tampa Bay Rowdies.

Cole now serves as a regular pundit across a range of different broadcasters, including TNT Sports and ITV Sport

He was joined in the charity match by fellow ex-professionals including Troy Deeney, Tom Huddlestone and Jack Wilshere, while stars such as Rod Stewart and Ray Winstone watched on from the stands.
