Chelsea have stepped ahead of Newcastle United in the chase for Tosin Adarabioyo.

The Fulham defender, who will be a free agent at the end of this month, has been close to finalising terms with Newcastle and was expected to sign after weeks of negotiations.

Manchester United had shown some interest and Chelsea made a contract offer just over a week ago - yet Newcastle were still considered favourites.

However, following the appointment of Enzo Maresca who knew Adarabioyo from their time at Manchester City, Chelsea have improved their offer and are now in the driving seat.

They also have the added attraction of qualifying for European football.

There is greater competition for centre back places at Chelsea but they have lost Thiago Silva and plan to sell Trevoh Chalobah who is valued around £25million. Adarabioyo is also homegrown.

Newcastle had identified Adarabioyo as a key signing this summer along with Lloyd Kelly of Bournemouth who is also a free agent.

They are also looking to beat Chelsea to the signing of Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford for around £20m and talks are progressing well on that front.

Newcastle turned to the England hopeful with Arsenal demanding too much money for Aaron Ramsdale.

Newcastle also want Crystal Palace forward Michael Olise.
