England boss Gareth Southgate has revealed Harry Kane wanted to take the penalty that Cole Palmer scored in the 3-0 win over Bosnia.

With the friendly clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina failing to spark into life approaching the hour mark, the visitors gave away a penalty at St. James' Park and Palmer stepped up to take it.

As he has done all season, the Chelsea forward tucked the spot-kick away and marked his first start with his first goal on the hour mark.

Three Lions captain and regular penalty taker Kane was being readied to enter the pitch when the spot kick was awarded.

Southgate said: 'He had the audacity to ask to come on and to score the penalty which was never going to happen!'

While he may have been disappointed in that moment, Kane went on to get on the scoresheet in the dying moments of the match after Trent Alexander-Arnold had doubled England lead minutes earlier.

The goal was the Bayern Munich striker's 63rd in international football, taking him one ahead of the legendary Ronaldo.

The England boss was impressed with the performances of fringe players, one of them being Palmer.

He said: ‘A first goal for Cole Palmer. He showed moments of what he is about. It was his first start for us and there is more to come as he feels more comfortable with the group and we feed him the ball as he needs it.

'He can play in a couple of other position and has had a fabulous no reason he can’t he can’t have a big impact with us.'

On the his team’s overall performance, the England boss added: ‘I’m pleased with the intensity of the game firstly, it was an important game in terms of the physical aspect and also to play against a back five which is what we could well play against in the first couple of matches.

'Needing to find solutions to that against a team who had a threat on the counter-attack so we had to be vigilant to the way we played.

'The scoreline reflected the performance, it was fair. Individual performances, there were numerous good ones.'
