Chelsea's unpredictable owners would be the authors if there was a book called: 'Recruitment, how not to do it'! Their vision is blurred, writes GRAEME SOUNESS

There's no doubting Behdad Eghbali and Todd Boehly have been listening to the wrong people since the day they walked into Chelsea.

I'm not sure they even listen to each other.

It has been clear from day one they have been getting the wrong advice over recruitment and they are now in a position where, after parting with Mauricio Pochettino and with just over a billion spent on players - plus more to come, they are looking for a sixth man to run the team in just over two years.

I'll say it until I am blue in the face, recruitment is the most important part of running a football club but if there was book written: 'Recruitment: How not to do it', Chelsea would be the authors.

I'm not sure what roles the co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart play but for me, in search of Nirvana, these owners have had their pants pulled down when it comes to the money they have spent. There is a premium to pay if you are a 'Big Six' team from the Premier League and more so if you are chasing the Champions League but there's been no common sense applied here.

Chelsea are now looking for a sixth manager under their ownership after parting ways with Mauricio Pochettino earlier this week

Mail Sport columnist Graeme Souness believes their next appointment will still be secondary to Chelsea identifying the right players to ensure the team moves forward

When Clearlake Capital originally took over Chelsea, Bruce Buck, Marina Granovskaia and Petr Cech all left. They should have been pressed to stay at the club and help the new owners on their learning curve but this group seem to think they know everything.

Roman Abramovich listened to the wrong people at first but he was a quick learner.

These guys are talking about coaches not sharing their football vision, we are hearing names such as Kieran McKenna, Enzo Maresca and Thomas Frank to replace Pochettino. They have been so unpredictable in that football vision so far that you couldn't second guess who they'd pick. And regardless of these so-called up and coming coaches, in the modern game, their appointment is still secondary to identifying the right players.

They paid £221million for Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez who haven't gelled as a midfield pairing and want to sell their captain Conor Gallagher.

Talking at a recent economic forum in Qatar, Boehly talked about building a young team and said: 'I would argue that the investments that we've made continue to hold their value, and really we're not spending the money, we're investing the money.'

Well, let's see. Time will tell if 'investing' should be replaced by 'blowing'.

Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo were signed for a combined £221million but have failed to gell as a midfield pairing

Chelsea's owners are instead pushing to sell their captain Conor Gallagher in the summer

These Chelsea fans are used to non-stop success. They want success next season, they wanted it last season, they don't want it in five years' time. And on current evidence, there's not many players they've bought for this team that you would take on that five-year journey, with the obvious exception being Cole Palmer. It's even too early to class him as a great player; the challenge is for him to replicate this season for the next decade before he can be a true superstar.

They've kidded themselves that their end of season results are indicative of progress but those results have just papered over the cracks. End of season wins never give you a true picture as, with little to play for, some of the opposition, their heads are already dreaming of being on a beach somewhere.

Whoever comes in, don't be fooled, the problems are still very much there.

Kompany can re-ignite the fire at Bayern

It tells you how much value is placed on the Premier League that the manager of the side that finishes second bottom with 24 points is wanted by Bayern Munich.

Vincent Kompany won FIVE games this season so why DO Bayern want the Burnley boss? German giants won over by the workaholic Pep Guardiola disciple

I know Vincent Kompany a little bit, I have worked alongside him on television, and he is a very impressive young man who has maintained his composure generally when life has been tough this season at Burnley. However, I am amazed, should it happen, that he has been offered the chance to manage Bayern, one of the game's great clubs.

I can't help expressing surprise, however, I do think he will do well as Bayern's squad will be fired up to improve on the campaign they have just had.

What I would have liked to have seen from Vincent last season was for him to be more flexible in his approach rather than playing tippy-tappy football all the time, trying to take the big boys on at their own game.

I thought it was very naive to stick to his principles with a brand of football that played out from the back then got picked off for fun against the bigger teams. I saw Eddie Howe attempt similar and get relegated with Bournemouth. There is no shame in mixing it up as ultimately, it's about getting results.

If Vincent does get the Bayern job, he will be walking into a fabulous squad with better players, different pressures and a need to win one of the two big trophies - the Bundesliga or the trophy with the big ears. Welcome to the big time and best of luck.

Even I’d suffer nerves in a Play-off final

I've played in European Cup finals but I think I'd be more nervous playing in a Championship Play-off Final at Wembley.

Lose a cup final and you can maybe move on with the next game, lose this and you will have the whole summer to dwell on it. Then at the start of the following season you find yourself back in the Championship and some will be feeling very sorry for themselves. You're not going to be in a good place mentally.

There are enormous consequences for the losers of this football match.

It's the richest game in football and it's all about playing in the Premier League. Get there and your value goes up, your stock goes up and your salary. Some of these players could be doubling their wages. They also know if they're playing against the best teams it can open the door for them to move up to a Manchester City, an Arsenal or Liverpool if they impress.

I'd say Leeds are slight favourites tomorrow, but I've liked the way Southampton have played at times. They were very good in the first half against Liverpool at Anfield against Jurgen Klopp's press and they have beaten Leeds twice this season. There is so much pressure, it is all about who deals with that the best.

Wharton has the edge on Mainoo

Adam Wharton has come a long way very quickly. He has been a stand-out performer at Crystal Palace since joining from my old club Blackburn Rovers in January and his elevation to the England squad is fully deserved.

What I like is his understanding of the midfield position. His head is constantly scanning around him so he has a full picture of what is on the pitch.

There have been comparisons with Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo as they are likely to be competing for the same England spot but, while Mainoo is very good on the ball, I'd say Wharton has greater awareness of all the jobs a midfielder needs to do at this stage.

Adam Wharton, left, could have the edge of Kobbie Mainoo, right, as the young midfielders compete for a place in Gareth Southgate's squad for the upcoming European Championships

Can Man United surprise City?

I would have put my house on Manchester City beating Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup final of 2013 only for Ben Watson to score the winner.

You'd never have anticipated Wigan knocking out City again in the sixth round the following year.

I can only see one winner this time and I'd have to back City. But those surprise results do crop up in the FA Cup and remind you of the old adage never apply logic to football matches.
