Jose Mourinho's difficult start to life as Fenerbahce manager continued on Tuesday night as his side crashed out of the Champions League.

Mourinho, 61, was appointed as manager of the Turkish giants this summer as he replaced former boss Ismail Kartal who was moved on despite leading the club to 99 points last season.

The former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan manager has been well received in Istanbul in what is his first role since being sacked by Roma in January.

Not all has gone swimmingly so far, however, with the Portuguese man booked 20 minutes into his first league game - a 1-0 win over Adana Demirspor - before his side failed to reach the Champions League group stages.

They lost 3-2 on aggregate on Tuesday night, despite their opponents, Lille, playing the final 11 minutes of extra time - including when they scored - with 10 men.

Fenerbahce went into the game trailing 2-1 on aggregate after losing in France last week, with Edon Zhegova netting in stoppage time to give the hosts the advantage going into the second game.

It took until the 91st minute of the game for the Turkish side to score an equaliser, with Bafode Diakite putting through his own net in the 91st minute of the game.

Aissa Mandi was given his marching orders to swing the tie into Fenerbahce's favour, but Jonathan David scored from the spot with two minute remaining to condemn Mourinho and Co to defeat.

At the weekend, Mourinho expressed his frustrations when a decision went against his team as he furiously gestured and shouted at the referee and fourth official.

United, now managed by Erik ten Hag, failed to qualify for the Champions League this season

Referee Atilla Karaoglan decided to intervene and handed Mourinho a yellow card, as the 61-year-old, who looked furious, showed he is still an extremely fiery figure on the touchline.

Mourinho's booking comes after he was also cautioned during the first leg againt Lille last week after he lost his temper with the referee.
