Ian Wright did not hold back when discussing the latest controversy surrounding Chelsea.

The Blues have found themselves caught in the midst of a particularly tumultuous period since Enzo Maresca replaced Mauricio Pochettino at the Stamford Bridge.

Once again the club have made huge investments in the transfer market, with nine arrivals already confirmed and more said to be on their way before the window closes.

As a result number of senior players have found themselves frozen out as the club's squad continues to bloat, with Raheem Sterling's representatives telling Mail Sport they would be 'seeking clarity' over his position after the club after he was left out of their Premier League opener.

With Reece James unavailable through injury in that game, Maresca offered the armband to Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

Ian Wright branded Enzo Maresca's decision to hand Enzo Fernandez the Chelsea captaincy 'embarrassing'

The Argentine donned the club's armband in their Premier League opener just months after being at the centre of a racism storm

Fernandez was snapped singing a racist chant on Argentina's bus during their Copa America celebrations

The decision came just months after Fernandez had sparked fury by participating in racist chanting with his Argentina team-mates following their Copa America triumph.

'Chelsea man, oh my god,' Wright said on the Wrighty's House podcast regarding the decision to give Fernandez the captaincy. 'Fix up yourselves. What are they doing?

'There's no way that man deserves the captaincy. It's embarrassing,' he added, before questioning what Fernandez had done to warrant the position given his less-than stellar showings for the club last season.

'He's not putting those kind of performances in, even before the chant stuff,' he continued. 'This guy has done nowhere near enough to be the captain of that club. And they make him captain?

'That tells me everything you need to know about Chelsea.'

Fernandez retained the armband on Thursday as the Blues kicked off their European campaign with victory over Servette in the Europa Conference League play-off round.

Prior to the commencement of the 2024-25 campaign Reece James admitted the storm surrounding Fernandez's racism controversy could prove to be a problem in the dressing room.

Wright added that the decision 'tells you everything you need to know about Chelsea'

The 23-year-old retained the captaincy for Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Servette on Thursday

'There's always the factor where it doesn't sit right with people when there could be a problem.' James told ESPN last month.

'But until the day comes where everyone's together and in a room together, I don't know, but I hope things can be resolved smoothly and we can move forward with the season.'
