Futre said: 'Friends, thank you all for your support. I will continue to fight, there are still many games to play. A big hug.'

Futre had revealed his mother had passed away on August 17 in a separate social media post.

He had shared a photo of the two of them and captioned it: 'Until always my dear mother, rest in peace.'

CM had reported from a family source that Futre had started to intensely sweat at the funeral before an ambulance was called, and it was explained that his blood pressure was low.

He was then taken to hospital where he was given a catheterization which is a procedure that drains the bladder and collects urine.

'He (Paulo Futre) felt bad during the funeral, he started to sweat a lot and we called INEM (Portuguese emergency services), who in the first observations found that his blood pressure was very low, which is why they decided to take him to the hospital', said a source close to Futre to CM.

The former footballer "entered the ambulance perfectly conscious" before he was transferred to a hospital on the south bank of the Tagus and later transferred to a Lisbon hospital, where the surgery was succesful.

Futre, 56, enjoyed a decorated career at several top European clubs before he joined West Ham in 1996.

He played for Sporting Lisbon, Porto, Atletico Madrid, Benfica and Marseille during a decorated playing career, while he also won 44 caps for Portugal.

The talented winger was once labelled the Portuguese Maradona but played just nine times for West Ham as he struggled with fitness during the latter part of his career.

However, he has gone down in folklore at West Ham for his brief spell in east London under the managment of Harry Redknapp.

After arriving to much fanfare despite no longer being the player he once was, Futre reportedly stormed away from the opening game of the 1996-97 season against Arsenal at Highbury after he wasn't handed his preferred No 10 shirt.

The winger was selected in Redknapp's starting XI but after being given the No 16 by kitman Eddie Gillam, he refused to play and packed his bags and jumped into a black cab, with John Moncur handed the No 10 instead.

The shirt situation was resolved the following week and Futre went onto dazzle while he was on the pitch, including a supreme display against Southampton which was his finest moment in a Hammers shirt.

His performance was lauded as one of the best indiviudal performances at Upton Park by BBC commentator John Motson.

After struggling further with injuries, his contract was cancelled by mutual consent later that season.

Futre has received several well wishes from across the footballing world after his surgery, including his former clubs Porto, Atletico Madrid and Sporting.
