Maguire's redemption: I have always believed in myself, they criticize me because they are looking for clicks

Harry Maguire was a giant at the 2018 World Cup. The then-Leicester center-back led the back three of an England side that reached the semi-finals.

He was a wall at the back and an offensive weapon up top. However, his best performances stayed in Russia.

In 2019 he was transferred to Manchester United for 87 million euros, becoming the most expensive central defender in history. A label that has haunted him at every failure.

He is a player that is criticized more than any other and he has addressed that in a recent interview.

"On my form, I don't know what has been said, I don't really read about it," Maguire told talkSPORT.

"I am working hard on the training pitch to make sure I am ready for when my opportunity comes. That is all what I can do to try and help the team.

"I am not concentrating on anybody else and what people are saying, I think if people can make a story about me, I am Manchester United captain, it is going to make big news.

"So that is the reason they do it, they like the clicks and things like that, but I went into the Euros after an eight-week injury, and did not play one game, and got into the team of the tournament.

"In terms of rustiness, and things like that, I am sure that won't happen."

He has often been heavily criticized by former footballers as well. "He is very slow when he has the ball at his feet. He takes five or six touches at a time and hesitates to pass," former player Richard Dunne told Virgin.

"He has other good qualities, but he lacks pace in the open field. It's one of his weaknesses," Rio Ferdinand noted on Youtube.

"It's too late for him to save his United career. Too often it seems as if the weight of the world is on his shoulders, as if he's a scared little bunny rather than the authoritative centre-back he was in the past. It is untenable that he is still in the national team," former international Jamie Carragher told the Daily Telegraph.
