Pep Guardiola has always been one for short contracts. The Catalan has always been known for making his decisions at the end of each season since he started his coaching career, something he was asked about this week after renewing just a month ago until 2025 with Manchester City.

Now, Pep, who is about to turn 52, has insisted that he is not going to do as Alex Ferguson did at Manchester United or Arsene Wenger did at Arsenal. Both the Scot and the Frenchman had extensive careers that exceeded 20 years at their respective clubs, but Guardiola is clear he is not going to be one of those cases.

"The moment I feel something is wrong, I will resign or not renew my contract. I will not stay like Ferguson or Wenger. The contract is just a piece of paper," Pep said.

"I extended my commitment to the club because I feel the team can still do well under my leadership. In the end, it's all about the result. If we get tired of each other, I will not stay until the end because of the contract."

Under the 51-year-old, the Citizens have made a remarkable leap in quality in recent seasons, winning four Premier League titles, four League Cups, two Community Shields and an FA Cup. What still eludes them is the Champions League, a competition they came close to winning in 2021 in losing in the final against Chelsea.

On New Year's Eve, City closed 2022 with a draw at home against Everton (Erling Haaland scored again) that allowed Arsenal to pull a little further clear in the standings to boast a seven-point gap at the top of the table.
