The Premier League wants to start 2023 the same way it left 2022: by showing everyone that no one can spend what they spend. Recently confirmed signings are only the beginning of a cascade of official signings that will turn world of soccer upside down.
Already last summer, the Premier League's transfer spending was overwhelming in comparison to what other European leagues invested: 2.24 billion euros for English clubs... to 749 million for Serie A. A gigantic difference that does not seem destined to be reduced in January of 2023.
But... What are the Premier League clubs spending their money on, and what are the current drama stories that could be closed in the first days of the New Year? Let's take a look.
Chelsea revolutionizes everything
Todd Boehly is not a man who thinks twice. Roman Abramovich's 'heir' at Chelsea already showed his economic power in the summer... and in January he won't be far behind. For now, there is only one official: David Detro Fofana arrives from Molde for just over 10 million euros. But this is the least high-profile of all the upcoming deals.
It's only a matter of time before Christopher Nkunku, who is expected to be a Chelsea player from July 2023, becomes official. The figure? 70 million euros. The signing of Benoit Badiashile is then going to be completed.
Chelsea will pay almost 40 million euros for the young French center-back to 'fix' the defensive problems they have: Kalidou Koulibaly (who cost 40 million euros in the summer) has not adapted to the Premier League... but he will not arrive alone: Andrey Santos (Vasco da Gama) will arrive at Chelsea for just over 10 million euros plus bonuses.
However, the jewel in the crown is supposed to be Enzo Fernandez in a transfer that could be record breaking. His buyout clause exceeds 120 million euros and Boehly is not afraid of it. But let's not stop here with Chelsea, because at Stamford Bridge they are also dreaming of a right-back after Reece James' new injury.
Mudryk and Arsenal
Mikel Arteta's Arsenal are a well-oiled machine, and City are stumbling more than expected. The result is a chance to win the Premier League that few Gunners fans would have imagined a few months ago. And to secure it, signings have to be made... especially after the injury to Gabriel Jesus.
Their target is Mykhaylo Mudryk. Shakhtar Donetsk's Ukrainian has been shining in the Champions League for several years and Arsenal have beaten everyone to him.
As reported in England, the agreement with the player seems to be complete, however, an agreement with the Ukrainian team is still missing. It will take more than 60 million euros to complete this deal.
The Joao Felix case
As MARCA reported on Sunday, the 'Joao Felix case' is not over as the player is waiting for both Arsenal and Manchester United to make a decision on a possible loan move for him.
These two clubs are the most interested in the Portuguese player, who wants to go to an elite club to continue to shine after his good World Cup.
City will not attract attention
Pep Guardiola's Manchester City are thinking of Jude Bellingham in the long term, but they don't expect to create many headlines in January.
However, the arrival of Maximo Perrone from Velez could be the only signing. It will all be official after the South American U20 Championship with City having already agreed a deal to sign the Argentinian star for just under 10 million euros.
Liverpool already signed Gakpo, but...
Cody Gakpo was a coup for Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp. Just when it looked like Manchester United were on their way to signing him, their Merseyside rivals jumped the gun. A transfer that strengthens a forward line that is improving by the day with Darwin Nunez becoming more and more acclimatized to life at Anfield.
But it's not all over with the Dutch striker, as Liverpool's long-term target remains Jude Bellingham. Whilst a move away from Borussia Dortmund before the end of the 2022/23 season seems impossible, Liverpool may want to try and get out in front of rival interest in the summer.
