Manchester City have once again been on the hunt in Argentina, with Maximo Perrone (Buenos Aires, 07/01/2003) becoming the latest addition from South America after Julian Alvarez, who joined the Premier League in the summer from River Plate.
City had been trying for some time to sign the Velez number 5 who, since his debut, has been compared by 'Ole' to Fernando Redondo. Perrone, however, is looking at Sergio Busquets as his role model.
Perrone, 20, signs with City for five and a half seasons. Velez will receive, in return, 9.3 million euros.
Perrone will join Pep Guardiola's team when he finishes his participation in the South American U20 Championship.
The Argentinian leaves Velez with 33 appearances, three goals and two assists to his name. The pivot was key to the Liniers side reaching the semi-finals of the last Libertadores.
We’re delighted to have completed the signing of Máximo Perrone from Vélez Sarsfield. The midfielder will join us after the U-20 South American Championship.— Manchester City (@ManCity) January 23, 2023
Welcome, Máximo! 💙🇦🇷#ManCity
It is another example of City working swiftly and discreetly in South America to sign talented young stars before a bidding war begins with a number of European sides which will inevitably bring the price up.
It may be a long time until we see him lining up in a City shirt in a big game, but the club may be viewing him as the eventual long-term replacement for a player like Rodri in the midfield.
Looking up to Busquets is certainly not a bad idea for a player trying to break into a Guardiola side as soon as possible.
