Mesut Ozil has gone viral on social media after he responded to a message from Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio poking fun at his beloved Arsenal.

The player showed his passion for the Premier League club still burns strong in a clever quip in response to DiCaprio's recent comments.

The actor revealed that he does not know much about soccer during a recent conversation with Lily Gladstone, his co-star in "Moon Killers", the latest film release by esteemed director Martin Scorsese.

During the conversation, it was pointed out that Premier League players were better when compared to how basketball players are viewed in the U.S.

"Better than Michael Jordan?" the actor asked in a surprised tone. He then went on to describe him as "the best basketball player ever".

DiCaprio indicated that he does not follow soccer and was quoted saying: "What is Arsenal?" when Mikel Arteta's team were mentioned.

And it seems Ozil was not best pleased with the Oscar winner's apparent ignorance towards English football.

Ozil sends a clear message on social media

Ozil, who has 26.3 million followers on X, formerly known as Twitter, took offence to the tweet and came up with a cheeky response.

Quoting the tweet about DiCaprio, Ozil tweeted: "Arsenal Football Club is older than 25 years old... so why should he know? #YaGunnersYa".

Those who know DiCaprio well won't need telling that his private life is often discussed in the press - and much has been made about his apparent refusal to date women who are older than 25.

His response received widespread approval from the Gunners fanbase, who still hold Ozil dearly in their hearts and have great memories of him despite his acrimonious exit under Arteta's watch in 2021.

The former Germany international joined from Real Madrid in 2013 for 42 million pounds and made 254 appearances in eight seasons in north London, scoring 44 goals. He is recognized as one of the best playmakers of his generation, creating 54 assists for his team-mates in the Premier League.

Ozil announced his retirement from football earlier this year after leaving Turkish Super Lig outfit Istanbul Basaksehir, with the ex-footballer now focusing his efforts on growing the profile of his esports team.
